Controversial Allegations Addressed by Oak Hill Committee
Oak Hill Study Committee issues formal statement in response to allegations made by Selectman Candidate Roland Van Liew
What was meant to be a focused on finalization of recommendations for the Oak Hill property to the Board of Selectmen took a very different path during Monday night's Oak Hill Study Committee meeting.
Controversy over allegations made against Oak Hill Study Committee member Phil Stanway leading up to last night’s committee meeting resulted in a formal statement that dominated proceedings surrounding allegations by Selectman candidate and BOS critic Roland Van Liew that Stanway was interested in creating a deal for selective logging of valuable hardwood at Oak Hill, supposedly in order to create revenue for the town.
“The allegation made on Friday by Mr. Roland Van Liew stating that one of the Oak Hill Study Committee members was involved in private negotiations with a selectman and a logging company related to valuable hard wood at Oak Hill caught me and the Committee by surprise,”said Committee chairwoman Susan Carter in a formal statement, going on to say there there is “no factual evidence to support any of Mr. Van Liew’s claims."
Carter continued, stating that “on behalf of the Oak Hill Study Committee, I want to say that I have full confidence in all our Committee Members including Phil Stanway who has publicly stated that he is not involved in any such discussions.”
The controversy began late last week after Van Liew contacted Stanway regarding questions about logging on Oak Hill, where Stanway referred Van Liew to Carter for further information, followed by public statement on the matter on the Better, Not Bigger Chelmsford website.
CORRECTION: On Van Liew's letter, he mentions a deal for the town, no personal gain was mentioned. We have reworded the paragraph in question to reflect this.

If nothing else...you have to give this guy an A for tenacity.....let's hope this accusation is proven as false as his past claims have been.

To Donna’s point – the trouble with this sort of allegation is that there is no way to actually “prove” it to be false. One can only take the absence of any evidence that it is true as being sufficient to conclude it is not true.
I have encountered Phil Stanway on a number of occasions over the last several years in my role as a Cub Scout leader and various other instances. He has no Cub Scouts of his own (I’m not certain whether he ever did), but he has been helping our Cub Scout organization for years, particularly with regard to our making use of natural areas such as Red Wing Farm for camping and hiking.
I first met Phil when he was running the volunteer cleanup at the town’s Friendship Park at Roberts Field. Phil puts more personal time and effort into caring for Chelmsford’s open spaces and other natural assets than any person I know of – and I don’t believe I have ever heard him suggest any activity on any of these spaces other than keeping them in the best possible shape for the enjoyment of Chelmsford’s residents now and in the future. If he had any notion of suggesting that the interests of the Oak Hill property would be served by any sort of logging activity, I do not for a second believe he would be discussing this “quietly” behind closed doors – partly because Phil has never seemed to me to have any hesitation about sharing his thoughts with anyone.
But I guess I’ll sit back and wait…. to see any evidence to the contrary.

See, that's just the point. These allegations are hard to prove or disprove which is exactly the way Selectman Candidate Van Liew operates. We've all seen it before - time and time again over the past few years. If he is so concerned about transparency in town government and protecting open space (namely the Oak Hill parcel in question), then it's as easy as RVL releasing (if not to the general public than to the Ethics Commission or other authority) the names of (1) his source (2) the selectman Phil is alleged to be dealing with and (3) the logging company. RVL "knows" this information. Let's hear it. Thing is, we WON'T EVER hear this information. He just throws cooked spaghetti at the wall to see what might stick. I'm not standing for this BS any more.

Roland, you run on your principle "Good and Honest" So what I am asking you as a resident and voter and I want an Honest answer, 1) Who is the selectman ( men) that you know of, involved in this back room deal? 2) What is the name of the logging company that has been contracted to perform the logging and can you produce a copy of the contract? 3) Being "Good and Honest" will allow you to disclose your source. Because we know that "Good and Honest Government should disclose sources so it is not perceived as a rumor creating unecessary anxiety among residents. It speaks to credibility of the allegations. I would like to know this information before I go to vote so I make sure I address the improprieties of a potential incumbent and /or address it before the election

SarahJAY: Joke? Or serious?
If joke - hahahahahahaha.
If not, FYI on the beech tree. A year ago, COSS arranged for clippings to be taken from the beech tree that are being carefully cultivated at a nursery in CT via Weston Nurseries. Success so far, so the tree will live on where ever it is determined to best serve the town.

Howdy Jo,
Of course joking about the beech tree, but not about this dog and pony show being broadcasted by the COSS. Town Talk tonight with the DR. as well. OUTLANDISH! You should stick with what you are good at. VOTE FOR ROLLIE EVERYONE!!!

RVL said "So I am publicly asking what is going on? Why on earth, after public pronouncements that the land is going to be protected, is a committee member already working with a selectman to set up a logging deal? "
I will be responding publicly to this nonsense on Dennis show tonight. Joanne as a CO Founder of COSS and the most professional media person I know will also be there..... doing indeed what she does best and has for decades.

The only response that matters is from Selectman Candidate Van Liew
1) Who is the selectman?
2) Who is the logging company?
3) Who was the source?
4) What evidence does he have?
5) Why will he not make his evidence public?
This is a complete fabrication and that is why he will not answer the above questions. This is what I will talk about tonight.

Howdy Phil,
1) The words "appears" and "supposedely" were used
2) If discussions were occuring this does not mean a specific logging company was selected. That it a question someone on the COSS came up with who is not very smart.
3) I would not disclose a source. They could be useful in the future.
4) He asked you for the evidence.
5) There is no need. If you were discussing this, you will not move forward with it now.
If is a fabrication there is nothing to talk about. You are going on to ask him questions, not to explain? Enjoy your spotlight. Sue "The Chair" Carter has explained enough.

No Andrew I will be on Town Talk tonight..
As for SarahJay. the exact quote form the news letter sent to residents is
"RVL said "So I am publicly asking what is going on? Why on earth, after public pronouncements that the land is going to be protected, is a committee member already working with a selectman to set up a logging deal? "
I have no evidence as this is 100% fabricated. Any other questions on this issue I will answer on the show tonight in a public forum.

Howdy Everyone,
Sue "The Chair" Carter has explained this. EARTH TO PHIL!!
Phil is going on the show for one reason only. The same reason he is speaking out about this so often these days. He doesn't want Rollie to be a Selectman. We all understand that Phil. If the COSS is able to influence C-FORD IT IS TIME TO SELL.

It's interesting that it seems perfectly acceptable for Selectman Candidate to berate town officials and selectmen running for re-election, as has been done over and over and over again for years, but somehow it's not okay to express the opposite opinion. TIME TO SELL THEN . . .

Anybody who knows Phil also knows this is all BS.
I've personally known him 20+ years.
I'm only sorry I'm not a Chelmsford resident to ensure one less vote goes to Mr. Van Liew.
With the most respect to the Stanway family and the selfless work they perform for Chelmsford. - Bob Mac.
