Brown Questions Markey's Malden Residency
Boston.com is reporting an early salvo has been fired in what could be the Senate special election showdown.
In a radio interview Wednesday morning, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) jabbed at Democratic Congressman Edward Markey about his residency in Malden, according to a Boston.com report.
Brown questioned if Markey still lives in Massachusetts anymore and also told WTKK-FM he often sees members of the Bay State congressional delegation on planes trips home but said "I have never seen Ed on the airplane—ever," according to the report.
This salvo from Brown could be a preview of a possible showdown with Markey over the Senate seat expected to be vacated by John Kerry if he is confirmed as the next U.S. Secretary of State. Boston.com reports Brown has "hinted" he could run for the seat while Markey said he would run if Kerry's confirmation is successful.
Markey's office released the following response
"Scott Brown has not yet announced that he is running for Senate, but he is already launching false, personal attacks from the sidelines. Ed Markey lives in Malden, and has lived there his entire life. He and his wife own their home in Malden. He is proud to come from and represent the values of the people of Malden. This campaign should be about what matters most to the people of Massachusetts: jobs, education, health care and the environment."
Brown's statement also received the following response from Malden mayor Gary Christensen.
"Ed Markey is very much a presence in Malden as evidenced by his leadership in securing funds for our downtown renovation and helping to bring a $51 Million baseball park to our City. When he’s not racking up legislative accomplishments, Ed can be found at the YMCA shooting hoops, at our fabulous restaurants on Saturday nights, or at community events throughout the year. He has long been a true champion for the City of Malden and as Mayor, I am proud that a national leader of Ed Markey's stature calls Malden home."

You are getting a glimpse of Brown as a cheap shot artist, trying to stay relevant. His sarcastic demure came out with his condescending comments to Senator elect Elizabeth Warren during the debates, the 3rd of which Brown ducked out after making such a fuss about them, since he lost the first two. This is coming from a guy that got a "strings pulled" promotion and transfer to the Maryland National Guard, when they already had their maximum quota. Looking for a Cherokee moment rather than come up with fresh ideas and talk issues with any degree of sophistication and experience. As far as legislation , the only thing he did was cherry pick Obama's proposals and voted against repealing oil subsidies since David Kock was one of his largest contributors ( Kock fronted all of the negative Superpac mailings). Now he pulls this.

Tyler,
You may want to read the article in the Boston Globe today. Brown is not the only person making the observation and it is not the first time. They also by the way pointed out his own move as well.
As far as fresh ideas, EW ran a campaign straight out of the guilt by assocation handbook. IAlso, you may want to actually read the context of the comments as well. If you think he intended the comments to be serious I think he would have chosen a different format.
