Askenburg Joins Race for Selectmen

The current chairwoman of the School Committee took out papers on Monday, bringing the field up to five.

On Monday morning, School Committee chairwoman Janet Askenburg took out nomination papers to run for the Board of Selectmen, bringing the number of candidates back up to five.

The race had five candidates after Pat Maloney entered the race, but had dropped to four after newcomer Louis Marino said he would not return his nomination papers.

"I am proud to announce my candidacy for the Chelmsford Board of Selectmen," said Askenburg in a released statement..  "I am running for one of the two Selectmen seats because I want to offer my experience as a business leader, community volunteer, and advocate for fiscal responsibility to help maintain and improve the quality of life for all Chelmsford residents."

More information on Askenburg's campaign is available at www.JanetAskenburg.com as well as by e-mail at janet@janetaskenburg.com, and by phone at 978-764-8037.

More information on the election is available on the Town Clerk's page on the town website.

I can't vote for Askenburg. She voted "no" for a 2% raise for teachers when the Chelmsford Teachers Union contract came up. Fortunately the other SC members and Town Manager voted "yes". As a Republican, she will not be able to affect any grant or chpt 70 money for Chelmsford. Sorry.

Tyler: it's a town election I don't think being a Republican or Democrat has much to do with it

Zach:That is a well-founded myth. I believe it does matter unless you believe that a person's party affiliation does not affect their governing style, which it does. "fiscal responsibilty " is Republican code for less government, anti-union sentiment, limiting taxation but still expecting basic things to get done ( unfortunately, nothing is free). I'm for fiscal responsibility; everyone is for fiscal responsibility. Ask then if the candidate is for doing away with collective bargaining or against tax classification. You will find that it matters. Also the ability to work effectively with Beacon Hill is effected . Money going down , nothing coming back, getting nowhere with Chpt 70 money. In my opinion , it makes a difference. Beacon Hill notices. That is just politics.

Tyler: I may be wrong but on the town election ballot they don't have a R or D next to their names. So why don't you provide what party so I can vote with my party

Town elections are non-partisan in terms of balloting.
