Chelmsford High to Host First Round of One Act Competition
For the first time ever, Chelmsford High School is proud to host the preliminary round of the Massachusetts Education Theatre Guild High School One Act Competition. This event will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at the Chelmsford High Performing Arts Center.
The competition, which includes 115 one act plays produced by member high schools, is organized on three levels; preliminary, semi- final and state. Student excellence in acting and technical design is recognized at each level, including the selection of an All – Star Company at the finals.
Students from Billerica, Tewksbury, Bromfield, Narragansett, Bradford Christian Academy, North Middlesex Regional HS, and Peabody will be competing alongside Chelmsford in this event. The first play will be presented at 9am. Tickets are available at the door and are $7.00 for students, $10 for adult. Chelmsford High’s entry is “The 39 Steps”, and is scheduled for a 2pm show.
The 39 Steps” directed by Lauren Cochran is an adaptation and reinterpretation of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film “The 39 Steps” about an average man, Richard Hannay, thrust into the world of espionage and mystery while on the run from the police for a crime he didn’t commit. The role of Richard Hannay is played by Shayan Sobhian, who is a junior at CHS. The adaptation by Patrick Barlow reinterprets the show as a comedy, with two actors called “Clowns”, performed at Chelmsford High School by John Adams and Cameron Zamagni, performing all the other roles besides Hannay, the mysterious Annabella Schmidt, played by Sarah Duffett, Pamela, the proper Englishwomen, played by Celia Chevalier, and The farmer’s wife, played by Erica Lundin. The remainder of the cast is an ensemble, who using their bodies’, make up the surrounding settings including an apartment, a train, and the London Palladium.
Please join us and enjoy a day of Theater at Chelmsford High School’s Performing Arts Center!

How does this operate? Do you go at a certain time and sit thru all 115 plays; will there be a schedule that tells you what is going on and at what time; if you see a play at 9 am but the next one your interested in is 2 hours lat, do you sit thru or can you leave and come back on same ticket? I am very interested in attending but I have no idea how much time to plan since I do't know how long 115 plays take to perform. Please, more information!

Peggy, CHS will host 8 schools: it is one of many sites in Massachusetts that will be hosting a preliminary round of the competition. One ticket is all that is required to see one or all of the plays at CHS. Each play can only be 40 minutes, including setting the stage, there will be brief intermissions between each play during which the judges do their scoring. There is a schedule of when each school performs, and a program of the selections. I dont have that at the moment, but I woiuld be happy to post later. The first show begins at 9, and Chs performs at 2pm - right after the lunch break. It is expected to be an all day event, with judges making their decisions in the early evening. Three schools will be chosen to move forward to the Semi finals, which will be held throughout Mass on March 10th. A smaller group will be chosen to move forward to the Finals, which are held in Boston. Two years ago Chelmsford was honored to perform in Boston, and progressed to the New England Regionals. I have attended a few of these events in the past, and the quality of the presentations are excellent..
